Hi Paolo,

sorry that I am writing in english.I am from Czech republic and I cannot speak in Italian language and I need google translator for this web. At first I would like to congratulation to you, your model is really georgeous. I am building the same model as you, but my work is not so nice as yours. Your model is source of inspiration for me. You wrote, that you used some modifiactions as per instructions from Vincenzo Lusci. I have a book from this author for this model, I do not understand the text, but pictures are very useful. I would like to ask you, if you also have a plans for La Couronne from this author ? I found these plans on web, but the cost for it is about 30€. I would like to ask you, if you have these plans, and you will not need them more, as your build is finished, if you would be so kind and sell me that plans. Especially I need plans for rigging, becuase Mantua rigging is a little bit poor, I think.

If you will have a time, you can check my build log on:

I wish you all the best !

Hi, Michal!
have you ever tried here: A La Couronne tervrajza ? I'm sure that one of these plans is very interesting for Couronne's rigging ...

Trink

majq 09-02-11 10:26 AM

Hi Trink,

many thanks for a link. I already have these plans, I found them a some time ago on another site. These Corel plans are good, it is similar to Mantua ones. But I think that Lusci's rigging is more accurate, as I saw on Paolo's ship. For example, in Mantua's and Corel's plans there are no ropes ended on railing on the stern deck, while Paolo has many stakes there and many ropes are fasten to them. Also the 2 anchors variant with buoys is very pretty and I would like to make my ship in this way. It is the reason why I would like to see Lusci's plans, especially rigging ones (because I already have a hull built). I can buy these plans on eshop, but the cost is almost 30€, so I am trying to find someone who have them, but do not need them and is willing to sell them cheaper.

Many thanks once again !

With kind regards,

Michal

Mario, thanks for your kind words, I think as well that my model is not very bad :) I like ships from 17th century, with nice galleries on the sern, such as Vasa or Sovereign of the seas. I will check your threads here and on MSW to subject your work to objective criticism :winker:

I would not like to mess this nice thread with our private conversations. Paolo created this thread for presentation his model and I respect it.

I thought about creating a thread about my model also on this forum, but I am not sure if it will make sense, when this web is mainly intended for Italian community and I cannot speak in Italian language :perp:

Hi Paul,
I hope you are fine ! I am contacting you with several questions related to La Couronne build. I hope that someone (maybe Alex ;-)) will be so kind and translate this post to your language, because Italian language is pain for me :-)

Now I have finished with hull and its decorations and preparing to to do masting and then rigging.
I will do my ship without sails, I do not like them much :-)
As I am trying to decode plans for rigging, some things are not much clear to me. Although I tried to find resolutions in original plans from Mantua, Lusci plans, Corel plans and also Lusci book (in Italian language and thus not uderstandable for me), I did not find any resolution. If you (or someone else) would be so kind and give me answers, I would very appreciate it.

My first question is about yards, how they are hung on masts. As per plans and Lusci’s book, the lowest yard is clear, it is hung by two ropes leading through mast cap then joined to one thread and fit to halyard on the deck, as is presented on picture1.

Yes, this lowest yards are clear, but how are hang upper yards ?
Upper yards seems to be not hang in the similar way – there is not rope led through upper caps. Where fitting ropes lead and where they are ended up ? Picture2 demonstrates my question.

It is critical for me, as I am doing now masts and I do not want to forget to anything (drill some hole or fit some capstan). Can you please explain me how upper yards are hang and where ropes are ended ? Either you can try to draw me it somehow, or make a photo from your model, if you would be so kind.

My last two questions are simple :-) Where did you get these nice hoders for lanterns (picture3)?

And finally, how did you blacken your figurehead ? My one from kit is funny glazy, it do not look much realistic (picture4).

Many thanks in advance and wish you all the best in your life !
BTW, are you still interesting in ship modelling ? Do you build some new nice model actually?

Best regards,

Michal

(terza foto).
Vi ringrazio tanto, anticipatamente, e vi auguro ogni bene!
Boden, sei sempre attivo nel modellismo navale? Costruisci ora qualche nuovo bel modello?

I've understood your question. It's difficult to explain in English the path of halyard rope in the middle- mastyard. The "Couronne" is a typical Dutch made ship (if I'm right, she was made just by Dutch craftmensip) ... so masting and rigging are made like in every two-deck Dutch ship of XVII century. If you have either some pictures of Wasa's wreck or its drawing plans you can easily see every detail of middle-mast yard hanging and how ropes start an end up and low, first on the crow-nest and finally on the deck (if I remember right, there's a tie rod on the crow-nest than the rope ends on the deck).

I must look for some picture at home, it's easier to show it than explain.

Alex

Alessandro

trinchetto 14-02-13 04:08 PM

Michal,
I've found something. Click the link and you'll find the whole set of a dutch ship (Prins Willem), that was build more or less in the same time of Couronne, with the same displacement. Ñóäîìîäåëèçì ×åðòåæè ïàðóñíèêîâ Prins Willem

Instructions and tags are in English, so you can follow and build the path of every mast and rigging. In particular, go to drawings # 9 and 10 and you'll find the answer to your question. In table # 10 (foremast rigging) give a look to # 639-643 (for mainmast, table #9, it's the same) and in table # 9 there's the drawing of every yard whit its rigging.

Bye
Trink

Michal, ho trovato qualcosa.

Ciao
Trink

Hi Trink,

you must hate me, you know that I do not understand Italian language, but I have to say, that Italian is pretty simple in comparison with language of pages which you provided a link to - it is in russian alphabet !!! :brig:

However, many thanks for instructions, I think that I figure it out now.
Upper masts are hang by ropes threaded through masts, then capstans and ended up on pins on the deck. I think that I understand it now.

Last two questions remains: holders for lanterns and blackening of figurehead.

I would like to extend my question list for Boden of one more: how did he blacken ropes ? On photos, there is riggning in gray threads provided in kit and on later photos, that ropes are blackened. Did he used some acrylic color ?

I very appreciate your effort in this matter :Ok:

Regards,

Michal

Hi Michal!
The internet site is Russian but model's instruction sheets are in English. You only should download them. The last link of that page ("Instructions") contains three documents; the first is the general instruction manual and the third is the list of every rigging path (numbers are tags of masts, yards and lays as shown in the drawings - link # 1-10). The second ... is an useful whole list of ship parts ... with a 4-languages translation (English, French, German, Italian).

Translation follows.

Ciao Michal!

Saluti
Michal

trinchetto 19-02-13 12:45 PM

Michal, I don't know how Boden darkened his ropes, but I can tell you how I do it: with a cotton swab ... exactely the little instrument for ear-claning!
I wet the cotton swab with liquid wood stain (dark walnut), then lean it on the rope. Immediately the rope blackens from side to side; if you have a long rope, repeat the operation step by step.
Be careful: do not wet the cotton swab too much.

majq 19-02-13 01:38 PM

Hi Trink, yeah, I downloaded and decoded plans for Prince Willem it helped me a lot with undrestanding, thanks for that. I just complained for that strange alphabet which pages are written. Of course I did not try to translate anything from that, only plans helped :-D

Wow, interesting techinque for blackening ropes, I will try it with my threads.
I also thought about colors for textile, maybe it will also provide good results.
I will try both techniques and let you know ;)

Many thanks again for participating in this discussion (although you are only one)...

All the best !

Michal

trinchetto 19-02-13 02:17 PM

Michal,
I tested lots of liquid products and I tested either first ropes' blackening or after their laying. Results:
1) liquid wood stain is the best product. It gives ropes the correct color : in the XVII century, they were covered with tar ... and its colour isn't pure black, but very dark brown; I think, the correct colour would be "Brown Van Dyk". Not only: liquid wood stain has a mineral solvant-base, so it penetrates deeply and speedy in rope's fibers and dryes in a few minutes.
2) it's better to blacken ropes after their laying on the model: paste doesn't make a great grip on coloured ropes. On the other hand, liquid wooden stain has no problem to penetrate pasted ropes.

I think you could open a topic about your model, so many of us might help you in these or other matters. :brig: With lots of pictures, obviously :brig::brig: !!!

Trink

Hi,

sorry for late response, I was under pressure last days :-(

Trink,

I will try both methods (darkening by wood stain and blackening by color for textile) and will see the result. Frankly, there is an black rope 0,25 provided with the kit and I already used it for gunports, so I would prefer other ropes also in black color - I do not want to have each rope in other colour. But I will test it and will see.

I already have my thread on this forum
(http://www.modellismo.net/forum/navi...antua-eng.html) and I also send some new pics there, but my original questions were intended to Boden, so I wrote to his thread. But I agree, lets continue in my thread, I do not want to mess Boden's one - his model is exceptional.

Killik,

many thanks for your willingness for translation from Russian language. I think that I do not need it yet, because I have already solve my problem out.

Warm regards,
