Michal, I don't know how Boden darkened his ropes, but I can tell you how I do it: with a cotton swab ... exactely the little instrument for ear-claning!
I wet the cotton swab with liquid wood stain (dark walnut), then lean it on the rope. Immediately the rope blackens from side to side; if you have a long rope, repeat the operation step by step.
Be careful: do not wet the cotton swab too much.
Michal, non so come Boden scurisce le sue cime, ma ti posso dire come lo faccio io: con un cotton fiocc ... esattamente il piccolo strumento per la pulizia delle orecchie!
Bagno il cotton fiocc con mordente liquido per legno (noce scuro), poi lo appoggio sulla cima. Immediatamente la cime annerisce da capo a capo; se si ha una cima lunga, ripetere via a via l'operazione.
Stai attento: non bagnare troppo il cotton fiocc.
