I have read through the whole article, and I think that decals is right. we usually wash the kit with soapy water, in order to eliminate any residue oils that may have been present in the mould.
with regards to the paint mix, it is balance between thinner and paint. It all depends on the type and brand of paint you are using. normally here in Malta we use a ratio of 60% thinner to 40% paint. Sometimes we mix at 70% thinner to 30% paint. The most important thing is to keep the thickness of the paint as minimal as possible. Do not over paint, as this will lead to other consequences.
Apart from that, the construction seems to be good. the building up and jointing is neat.
