I tested lots of liquid products and I tested either first ropes' blackening or after their laying. Results:
1) liquid wood stain is the best product. It gives ropes the correct color : in the XVII century, they were covered with tar ... and its colour isn't pure black, but very dark brown; I think, the correct colour would be "Brown Van Dyk". Not only: liquid wood stain has a mineral solvant-base, so it penetrates deeply and speedy in rope's fibers and dryes in a few minutes.
2) it's better to blacken ropes after their laying on the model: paste doesn't make a great grip on coloured ropes. On the other hand, liquid wooden stain has no problem to penetrate pasted ropes.

Michal, ho provato tantio prodotti liquidi e ho provato a colorare le cime sia prima che dopo la loro posa. Risultati:
1) il mordente liquido è il miglior prodotto. Dà alle cime il giusto colore: nel XVII secolo erano coperte con catrame ... e il suo colore non è nero puro, ma marrone molto scuro; penso il colore corretto si il "Bruno Van Dyk". Non solo: il mordente liquido ha un solvente a base minerale, così penetra in profondità e velocemente nelle fibre della cima ed asciuga in pochi minuti.
2) è meglio scurire le cime dopo la loro posa sul modello: la colla non fa grande tenuta su cime colorate. Per contro,, il mordente liquido non ha problemi a penetrare4 nelle cime già incollate.
Penso che potresti aprire una discussione sul tuo modello, così molti di noi potrebbero aiutarti in queste od altre questioni. Con tante foto, ovviamente!
